In August 2023, I rode from Oslo to Stavanger across southern Norway. I stopped in Horten, Sandefjord, Porsgrunn, Lunde, Vrådal, Dalen, Valle and Fidjeland. I had a mostly great time, though next time, I would take the train straight to Lunde and spend more time along the coast near Stavanger.
Here are some photos from my trip. I am happy to answer questions on the route or anything else.
Oslo to Porsgrunn

Porsgrunn to Dalen

Dalen
I stopped for a day in Dalen, surrounded by amazing landscape, and hiked up to the Eidsborg Stave Church: beautiful but exhausting, so I treated myself to a fancy lunch at the famous Dalen Hotel.

Dalen to Stavanger
The last part of my trip was the best, even though it started with a 3km climb at 10%. It turned out to be worth it for all the amazing views over the next three to four days. I even had an empty hotel to myself in Valle – I didn’t even see the owner who told me the lockbox number and to let myself in.

The real highlight was the Suleskardveien, the road between Nomeland and Suleskard. It was a lot of climbing: I rode up over 1200m in 60km but it was totally worth it and not as exhausting as you might think.

I stayed in a decent hotel in Fidjeland and then set off again, mostly along the Hunnedalsvegen, the 450. Perhaps not as spectacular as the day before but still fantastic.

After an overnight stop in the hamlet of Figgjo, I rode the final easy kilometres into Stavanger. As I paused to admire the view, a cyclist called “Stop!” and kindly took a photo, telling me that I should have stayed longer in Stavanger and explored the area.

I hope that you liked this. If you did or have any questions, please leave a comment below. I enjoyed Norway so much that I went back the following summer and did a two week round trip from Bergen. If you want to read about it, click here.
